Meta's MTIA AI Chip: 4 Generations in 2 Years, 25x Performance Gains, Breaking Free from NVIDIA
Meta unveiled four generations of its custom AI chip MTIA (300-500), achieving a 25x performance gain in just two years. With hundreds of thousands deployed in production, it signals Meta's strategic push to reduce NVIDIA GPU dependency and lower AI service costs.

Why Meta Is Building Its Own AI Chips
The scarcest resource in AI right now is the GPU. NVIDIA controls over 80% of the market, so every company wanting to do AI must wait in line. Each chip costs tens of thousands of dollars, and supply is tight.
Meta needs to run AI across 3 billion users on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Feed recommendations, ad optimization, Reels, spam filtering — it's all AI. Depending solely on NVIDIA is both expensive and supply-risky.
So Meta started designing MTIA in-house, partnering with Broadcom to deliver 4 generations in just 2 years.
