Claudian brings Claude Code inside Obsidian
A new Obsidian plugin lets Claude Code read, write, and edit your notes. 4,500 GitHub stars as note-takers discover AI-powered vaults.
If you use Obsidian (the popular note-taking app with 5+ million users) and love what Claude Code can do for coding, you'll want to see this: a new plugin called Claudian brings Claude Code's full power directly into your note vault.
The plugin has already gathered 4,500+ GitHub stars and 405 new stars today, signaling huge demand for AI-powered note management.
Your Notes Become Claude's Workspace
Claudian doesn't just chat with you about your notes — it gives Claude full access to your vault. That means the AI can:
📝 Read any note and understand its content, including images
✏️ Write and edit notes with word-level diff previews (you see exactly what changed)
🔍 Search across your vault to find related notes and connections
⚙️ Run terminal commands for advanced workflows
🔗 Connect to external tools via MCP (the same protocol Claude Code uses for databases, APIs, etc.)
Smart Features for Note Power Users
What makes Claudian stand out from generic AI chat plugins:
@ mentions — Type @ to reference specific notes in your conversation. Claude reads them instantly.
Inline editing — Select text, ask Claude to improve it, and see a highlighted diff before accepting changes.
Slash commands — Create reusable prompt templates like /summarize or /translate that you can trigger anytime.
Plan mode — Press Shift+Tab and Claude designs a plan before making any changes, so you stay in control.
Three Permission Levels
Worried about an AI freely editing your notes? Claudian offers three safety modes:
- Safe Mode — Claude asks your permission before every action
- Plan Mode — Claude shows you the plan first, then executes after approval
- YOLO Mode — Full automation, Claude does everything without asking (for when you trust the process)
All conversations and settings stay local on your device in your vault's .claude/ folder. No telemetry, no data collection.
How to Install
You'll need Claude Code CLI installed first, plus a Claude subscription or API key.
Easiest method (via BRAT plugin):
- Install the BRAT plugin in Obsidian
- Add the repository:
https://github.com/YishenTu/claudian - Enable Claudian in your Community Plugins settings
Manual install: Download main.js, manifest.json, and styles.css from the latest release, create a claudian folder in .obsidian/plugins/, and drop the files in.
The Obsidian + AI Combination
Obsidian users have long been some of the most productivity-obsessed people in tech. Adding Claude Code's agentic capabilities — where the AI doesn't just answer questions but actively works with your files — turns Obsidian from a note-taking app into an AI-powered knowledge workspace.
Whether you're a researcher organizing hundreds of papers, a writer managing drafts, or a student connecting lecture notes, Claudian makes your vault smarter.
