A security research team just demonstrated that Snowflake's AI assistant can escape its protective sandbox and execute malware on your system — without asking for your permission first. The finding, published by Prompt Armor, highlights a growing problem: AI tools that look safe but have fundamental design flaws.

The vulnerability affects Snowflake Cortex, an AI coding assistant built into Snowflake's data platform (used by thousands of companies for cloud data storage and analytics). It reached the front page of Hacker News with 66 points and sparked sharp criticism from security professionals.

How a "Sandboxed" AI Runs Wild

A sandbox is like a locked room for software — code runs inside it but can't touch anything outside. It's the most basic safety measure for AI tools that generate and run code. But Snowflake's implementation has a critical flaw.

Here's the problem: Cortex can set a flag that triggers code execution outside the sandbox. When the AI sets this flag, the command immediately runs on your system with full access — and you're never prompted for consent.

Why this matters: Through prompt injection (a technique where an attacker hides malicious instructions in data the AI reads), a bad actor could trick Cortex into running harmful code on your machine — downloading malware, stealing files, or accessing your network. The sandbox is supposed to prevent exactly this.

The consensus: a sandbox that can be disabled by the very AI it's supposed to contain isn't a sandbox at all.

1. Check permission settings. Make sure your AI tool asks before running code. Tools like Claude Code have built-in approval prompts — use them.
2. Don't paste untrusted content. Prompt injection often hides in copied text, README files, or data feeds. If an AI tool reads it, it could follow hidden instructions.
3. Run AI tools in isolated environments. Use containers or virtual machines when possible, so even if something escapes, the damage is limited.

The AI industry is racing to add capabilities to their tools. Security often comes second. Until that changes, treat every AI coding assistant the way you'd treat any software that downloads things from the internet: with healthy skepticism.
