Amazon just brought Alexa+ to Europe — the UK gets it first
Alexa+ launched in the UK on March 19 as Amazon's first European AI assistant rollout, with agentic features that order food, book rides, and understand British slang — free for Prime members.
Amazon's next-generation AI assistant, Alexa+, is now live in the UK — making Britain the first country in Europe to get the upgrade. Starting March 19, 2026, anyone who buys a new Echo device gets early access. After the trial ends, Prime members keep it free; everyone else pays £19.99/month.
This isn't just a voice assistant that sets timers. Alexa+ is designed to take real-world actions on your behalf — ordering takeaway, booking restaurant tables, scheduling home repairs — all through natural conversation.
An AI that actually does things for you
Unlike the original Alexa, which mostly answered questions and played music, Alexa+ acts more like a personal assistant. It can string together multiple steps to complete tasks — what the industry calls "agentic AI" (an AI that doesn't just respond, but takes action).
What Alexa+ can do in the UK right now:
You can also talk to it naturally — change topics mid-conversation without repeating the wake word every time. It remembers context as you move between rooms and devices.
It understands 'cuppa' and 'knackered'
Amazon didn't just flip a switch and ship the US version overseas. A team of engineers, linguists, and speech scientists at Amazon's Cambridge tech hub customized Alexa+ specifically for British users. The system uses regional speech processing so it can understand accents from Manchester to Cornwall.
It also knows British phrases — ask for a "cuppa" and it won't get confused. UK-specific date formats, local references, and cultural context are all baked in.
How it compares to the US version
In the US, Alexa+ already works with Uber, Grubhub, Ticketmaster, Thumbtack, and OpenTable. The UK version starts with fewer partners — JustEat, OpenTable, and Treatwell — but Amazon says more integrations are coming "in the coming weeks."
The US version launched in February 2026 at $19.99/month (free for Prime). The UK pricing mirrors this at £19.99/month. Amazon plans to roll Alexa+ to "hundreds of thousands" of UK customers during the early access period.
Which devices work with Alexa+
Alexa+ supports eight years' worth of Echo devices, plus Fire TV and the Alexa mobile app. Amazon also confirmed a browser version is in development, which would let you use the AI assistant on any computer.
The bigger picture: Amazon vs. Google vs. Apple
This launch puts Amazon ahead of Google and Apple in the European AI assistant race. Google's Gemini is deeply integrated into Android but hasn't launched agentic features in Europe yet. Apple's revamped Siri keeps getting delayed — now expected no earlier than late 2026.
For Amazon, the stakes are high. The company reportedly lost billions on Alexa before pivoting to the AI-powered Plus model. Making it free for Prime members is a clear play to lock in subscribers and justify the $139/year membership.
