Shopify put 5.6M stores inside ChatGPT — orders up 11×

As of March 24, 5.6M Shopify stores are live inside ChatGPT for 880M monthly users. AI-driven orders jumped 11× since 2025. Products opted in by default.

On March 24, 2026, every eligible Shopify merchant in the United States woke up with their products already discoverable inside ChatGPT. No setup required. No integration to build. No app to install. 5.6 million Shopify stores became instantly accessible to the 880 million people who use ChatGPT every month — and most merchants didn't know it was happening until it did.

This is Shopify's new Agentic Storefronts feature, and the timing tells the whole story: AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has already surged since January 2025, while AI-attributed orders have jumped 11×. Shopify isn't experimenting with AI commerce — it's standardizing it.

By the numbers:

5.6 million merchants now inside ChatGPT
880 million monthly active ChatGPT users they can reach
increase in AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores since Jan 2025
11× increase in AI-attributed orders in the same period
4% ChatGPT transaction fee (Google AI Mode and Gemini: no extra fee)
• Before launch: only ~12 merchants out of 5.6M were actively using AI to sell
• Launch date: March 24, 2026

What Customers Actually See Inside ChatGPT

When a ChatGPT user asks something like "recommend a leather wallet under $80" or "find me a birthday gift for a photographer," the chat now returns shoppable product results directly from Shopify merchants. Users see product names, prices, and descriptions — and can click through to the merchant's checkout page via an in-app browser.

Purchases aren't completed inside ChatGPT itself. You keep your own checkout flow, your branding, your customer data, and your storefront. ChatGPT becomes the discovery layer; Shopify stays the transaction layer. Orders from ChatGPT appear in your Shopify Admin (your store's management dashboard) with full ChatGPT referral attribution — so you can track exactly how much revenue AI conversations are generating.

Which Platforms Are Supported — and What Each Costs

At launch, Shopify Agentic Storefronts works across five AI platforms:

  • ChatGPT4% transaction fee on AI-assisted sales
  • Google AI Mode (Google's AI-powered search interface built into Search) — no additional fee
  • Gemini app (Google's standalone AI assistant) — no additional fee
  • Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft's AI assistant integrated into Windows and Microsoft 365) — no additional fee
  • Perplexity (an AI-powered search engine) — no additional fee

The ChatGPT 4% fee applies only to orders directly attributed to ChatGPT conversations — not to your total store sales. If you already use Google Shopping, the Google AI Mode integration uses the same product feed you've already set up, with no extra configuration.

How to Check and Control Your Store's Settings

Products are opted in by default. Here's exactly where to go to verify your settings or opt out:

  1. Log into your Shopify Admin at admin.shopify.com
  2. Go to Sales Channels in the left sidebar
  3. Select Agentic Storefronts
  4. Click Manage Settings to review or adjust what's listed

If you're not on Shopify but want access to the same AI channels, Shopify has launched a standalone Agentic Plan — a new subscription that lists your products in the Shopify Catalog and makes them accessible across all five AI platforms without requiring a full Shopify store.

The Infrastructure Behind It: Universal Commerce Protocol

The technical foundation is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) — a standard co-developed by Shopify and Google, with backing from Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa. The goal: a shared language that lets any AI assistant interact with any retailer's product catalog in a consistent, standardized way.

If UCP becomes a standard (similar to how HTTPS became the universal standard for secure web browsing), being AI-discoverable could become a baseline requirement for any online business. For marketers and e-commerce operators, the practical implication is immediate: product description quality now directly affects AI discoverability. AI models surface results based on how well they understand your product's context and use case — not just keyword matching. Now is the time to audit your product listings for clarity and completeness.
